A Prayer for My Son / A Letter to Him

Dear Timothy,

How much you have grown this year. You continue to amaze me with how you handle school and all the challenges involved in that. You are a young man with a big heart – we thank God for that!

It is beautiful to watch you interact with your friends and to hear that you are an encourager in school to many. How wonderful!

You have also deeply reflected on the probable adoption of a new child into our family. You have offered your concerns and are willing to accept this challenging adventure for us all.

We thank our Heavenly Father for you! We thank you for keeping us honest and on track.

You continue to play ping-pong and from the get-go you have one your first tournament. This is great!

May the love of God, the grace of our Lord Jesus, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with us all evermore.

We love you!

In Christ. AMEN.

A Prayer for My Wife / A Letter to Her

My prized esposa, Danielita

What would I do without you? I don’t know and I really don’t want to know. The thankfulness to God for permitting a wretched man like me to have you as a wife cannot be expressed to our Heavenly Father!

But I am also grateful to you for bearing my stupidity (here and there … teilweise) and laughing with me. How does one divide fairly a Kinder Country? 😉

You are an amazing woman, wife, and mother. We all love you!!!

It is also thrilling to see your involvement in church and wider society. You are already such a blessing to so many around us (though we have only been in Arequipa for a “short” time).

May the God of all beauty keep you close to His heart, so that His beauty continue to shine through you!

I love you!
In Christ. AMEN.

A Prayer for My Son / A Letter to Him – Jason Esra Turned Eight

Dear Jason,

Now that you are in second grade, you are already able to read and write in Spanish and German. You speak fluently Spanish and some English as well. I am proud of your abilities to be “at home” wherever we are and being open to open our home for others. God has gifted you with joy and creativity. Thank you, Lord, for that!

Depending on the time of the day, you are a secret agent, a musician, a ninja, Manuel Neuer…wow! Thank you for keeping our lives excited.

May the God of creation, the God of all creativity, guide you in our future adventures as family as well as you as an individual with daily growing capacities for understanding the world and its Creator.

We love you so much!

In Christ, Amen.
Papa

A Prayer for My Son / A Letter to Him – Joel Caleb Turned Twelve

My dear son, Joel. What a year has gone by. Not only have you improved on your Spanish (now speaking it without accent) but also on your schoolwork. When you have set your own learning goals (and pace), you have managed very well. I thank God for your diligence and perseverance.

You are still helping your brothers and serve them when needed. Thank you! It is a joy to see you grow in so many aspects of your life. May you prosper and find your place in this world. It is greater with you!

This year they might be some more changes heading our way, but I am more than sure that our Heavenly Father again will see us through and guide us to do His will.

I know that your dad is less and less chévere for you and I try not to embarrass you too much (… maybe here and there some kisses while picking you up from the school bus …).

God continues working in you and I am eager to see what this means for you and us in this coming year. God with you, my son!

We love you.

In Christ,
AMEN

A Prayer for My Son / A Letter to Him

Dear Timothy,

my little „I-know-it-better“. Another year has passed and it amazes me how well you have settled here in Arequipa. You have a bright mind and you are grwoing more and more into a man. I thank God for you!

To us it is also wonderful to see that you are creating friendships in school and church. May God guide you in choosing persons so that you might be a blessing to them (and hopefully they to you too).

Thank you, Heavenly Father, for Tim. Thank you for his gifts. Thank you for letting him be part of our family.

This year you have chosen to play ping-pong and you play it like a pro. I am looking forward to our new house and hopefully a table to play ping-pong with you … maybe, but only maybe, I will let you win once or twice 🙂

God loves you Tim, we love you, and your friends and wider family love you! May you grow in God’s love so that you can reflect His love to those around you.

In Christ. AMEN.

A Prayer for My Wife / A Letter to Her

My precious wife,

Now we have been living in Peru for almost 10 months. And as always you are already communicating fluently with those around you. Your ability to hear and listen amazes me. Not only does your language ability amaze me, but your creations of new relationships with so many people (like neighbors, parents at school, caseritas, etc.) is so beautiful to observe. Thank God for such an amazing woman!

Again, you have made the transition to another country as smooth as possible. Thank you! Thank you for helping me live, thank you for enduring me (muchas veces), thank you for following Christ diligently!

You are as beautiful as before (no, you are actually growing in beauty, if that were even possible in your case!) – inside out.

May your Creator strengthen you and guide you in this new year!

I love you!

In Christ. AMEN.

A Prayer for My Son / A Letter to Him – Jason Esra Turned Seven

Dear Jason,

Amazingly, a year has already passed by. You are not going to kindergarten anymore but are no part of the big boys – you are going to school. And it seems to me you are truly enjoying school – especially creating friendships with other children.

You still love to dress yourself with different costumes each (especially the ninja costume). You are amazing. The way you play, the way you listen to music, the way you are. Thanks be to God!

Thank you for teaching me how to have fun and not be so serious all the time. May God always be with you and grow you into the man you were created for!

We love you dearly!

In Christ, Amen.

Papa
